Society for Sustainable Living
Through our activities, we strive to promote sustainability in the Czech Republic.
What is sustainability?
Sustainable development of society is development that preserves the ability of current and future generations to meet their basic needs without reducing the diversity of nature and preserving the natural functions of ecosystems.

About Society for Sustanable Living

Who we are
STUŽ is a voluntary non-profit non-governmental organization (civic association) that was founded in September 1992 on the initiative of Josef Vavroušek, the first Minister of the Environment of Czechoslovakia.
What are our goals
The basic goal of the Society is to seek ways to achieve sustainable development of human society, to approach the ideals of humanism and, at the same time, the ideals of harmony between humans and nature, with the aim of preserving life in all its forms and protecting nature as a whole, with an awareness of our responsibility to present and future generations. We focus our activities on researching and creating the conditions for a sustainable way of life at the local, regional, national, and global levels. We see the transition to sustainability as the only alternative to trends that are deepening the ecological crisis, which would devastate the biosphere and society on a local and ultimately global scale. At the same time, we do not hide the fact that society's transition to a sustainable way of life will require fundamental and multifaceted social changes in the coming decades. One of our goals is therefore to study the social aspects and risks of anticipated future changes.

Our activities
Through regular discussions, seminars, and conferences held in rented premises, STUŽ strives to influence the general public and professionals in line with its above-mentioned objectives. STUŽ issues statements on key current issues, particularly in the area of sustainability. STUŽ enables its members to participate in selection procedures at grant agencies and foundations to obtain financial support for professional projects.

About our members
Currently, STUŽ has more than 250 registered members. Our ranks include not only environmentalists, but also natural scientists, economists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, sociologists, philosophers, journalists, artists, and, last but not least, students and other people who strive for the same goals. Our honorary board includes well-known figures from the worlds of science and the arts.
